What can my car actually do with CarPlay or Android Auto?

Check what is already supported, whether an official OEM update or retrofit is documented, and what you need to verify next.

Proving release: deliberately narrow. Current deterministic evidence covers a 2018 Mazda6 Touring-and-above retrofit path, positively identified Ford SYNC 3, Volkswagen App-Connect, and BMW option code 6CP. Other vehicles stay unresolved rather than being guessed from brand and model year.

Detailed upgrade guides

Guide: can you add CarPlay or Android Auto to an older car?

Why the checker sometimes asks about the infotainment system

Model year alone often does not prove which head unit or software generation is in the car. BecSpec asks for SYNC 3, App-Connect, MAZDA CONNECT or an equipment code only where that detail changes the answer.

Factory capability is not the same as an upgrade

A car can have a platform that supports CarPlay or Android Auto without proving that an older configuration can be upgraded. Retrofit hardware, software campaigns and digital activations are kept separate.

Evidence boundary

This proving release uses small, independently authored factual determinations backed by manufacturer technical communications hosted in the US NHTSA public archive. BecSpec does not reproduce OEM compatibility tables or treat manufacturer websites as reusable datasets. The manufacturer or dealer remains the final authority for the exact VIN.
